The Northeast kingdom railroad

Thanks for visiting the on-line counterpart to my HO scale model railroad layout, the Northeast Kingdom Railroad. My name is Mike McNamara and whether you have been to my website before or just came across it while browsing the Internet, I hope you’ll find some useful and entertaining information here. If you have been to my layout, I hope this will add to your knowledge and make you want to come back for another visit.

Welcome

Current News:

Feb. 2010 Update:

Right now I am installing Tortoise switch machines on the 3rd phase section, representing Whitefield and Crawford Notch, plus the MEC and CP staging. All mainline track is in, plus all staging tracks. Wiring is complete. Tortoises will be controlled by Digitrax DS44 decoders. Once done, I plan to finish all sidings so the trackwork will be complete!

I added a page for my recent Caboose Flasher article published in the MER Local.

September 9-12 2010: I plan to attend the NER convention in Burlington, VT the Champlain Flyer. I will be giving 2 clinics, one on the St. J & LC/Lamoille Valley and the other on Free-Mo modular railroading

September 30 - October 3 2010: I will be at the MER convention in Princeton, NJ, as my Division hosts the Princeton Junction convention. I will be giving clinics here as well, TBD.

November 2010: I will have my layout open to the public during November, exact dates TBD.

Web page written and maintained by Mike McNamara

My model railroading interest is in northern New England railroading, primarily in the late 1970s to early 1980s time period. I am particularly interested in the Maine Central Railroad and its Mountain Division, from Portland, Maine to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. I am also interested in the Boston & Maine, Lamoille Valley, Canadian Pacific and Central Vermont lines operating in Vermont. To incorporate all this my layout is being built to center around the yard in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

This website encapsulates a lot of the research information I compiled while designing and building my layout. You will find information here about the prototype as well as information on how I built my layout and how I built specific models for the layout.

I have lots of information spread out on the pages of this site. To help you get to what you want quickly, I have divided the information into 4 topics:

Prototype Railroads

My Layout

Model RR Projects

Articles I have written

Each main page will take you to more web pages under those specific topics. It may take you a while to get through everything I have here, but take your time and enjoy. Add a bookmark and stop by often.

If you would like to contact me, to ask questions or provide information, go to my About Me page for my e-mail address.

Enjoy!

Here are two views of relatively completed scenes on my layout. They sit across the aisle from one another. On the left, a Canadian Pacific RS2 waits for inbound trains next to the landmark ET & HK Ide building in St. Johnsbury, VT. Meanwhile, on the right, a Lamoille Valley RS-3 with train MJ-2 works approaches the grade crossing at East Hardwick, VT.

My layout was part of two tours during the NMRA’s National Convention in Philadelphia, PA, the Independence Junction, in July of 2006. If you were on one of those tours, drop me an e-mail and say hello!
